About

Britannia is the latin term for the island of Britain used by the Romans. Britannia is also the female personifaction of Britain used since Roman times. First appearing on Roman coinage over 2000 years ago, the figure of Britannia was depicted as a seated Celtic native in the style of a classical goddess with a spear - which eventually became a trident (A three-pronged weapon wielded by sea Gods from classical mythology) and a Greek Corinthian helmet - resembling ancient Greek Goddess Athena. Resurrected again in coinage in the 1600's long after the Romans left she was then depicted holding a trident and Union Jack shield
